Day 1 - Birth

ante diem iv Idus Julias DCLIV A.V.C. (July 12th, 100 BC)

My master, Gaius Caesar, and his wife, Aurelia, had a baby boy today. My master seemed very pleased and was quick to perform the tollere liberos (a symbolic raising of the baby to demonstrate the father's acceptance of a child, for those of you reading my posts in barbaric lands unaccustomed to Roman ways.)

The portents are very favorable for this child, according to the priests.

A handsome, healthy baby boy

Experience the birth of Julius Caesar
1. Choose a mother (Aurelia) and a father (Gaius Caesar). Casting lots (names in a hat) is a fair way to choose the mom and dad.
2. The mother and her midwives should be secluded for the birth (a birthing chair was used - you may want to show a picture). They will call upon Juno Lucina, Roman goddess of childbirth, to assist with the delivery.
3. After the birth, the swaddled baby should be brought out to the father with much fan fare.
4. The father raises the child in front of those present as a symbol of his acceptance of the child (otherwise, the child must be exposed or sold).
